Body lift, also known as lipectomy, is a combination of several surgical procedures designed to remove excess skin after massive weight loss, focusing on toning the body and creating an entirely new body figure.
Depending on the location of the surplus skin, patients may choose to undergo either an upper, mid or lower body lift. For patients with significant amounts of excess skin, a combination of these techniques called full or total body lift may be the best option.
Many people who lose massive amounts of weight, whether through diet and exercise or after undergoing bariatric surgery, are left with sagging skin and stubborn deposits of fat on various parts of their bodies. This is not only a cosmetic problem since these people often have difficulties embracing their new bodies and finding clothes that fit properly; they are also more vulnerable to skin infections and self-consciousness discomfort.
The body lift is an extremely effective plastic surgery procedure for patients with excess skin and other tissues. Total Body lift or “All in one Body Contouring” is the most comprehensive surgical option for toning the body: this multiple-area surgery is a powerful way to improve overall physical shape and tone underlying tissues that support the skin.
This comprehensive procedure can involve removing excess skin, fat, and tissue in your groin, thighs, buttocks, midsection, hips, lower back, arms and breasts. The type of body lift surgery you choose will greatly depend upon the location of the excess skin, as well as your overall aesthetic goals. The surgeries may include an arm lift, breast lift or reduction, tummy tuck, inner or outer thigh lift.
Liposuction is a common technique used to precisely target pockets of stubborn fat.
Body lift surgery is a fairly complex and also highly customizable procedure, so potential candidates must meet certain criteria to be eligible. You should have already maintained a stable weight for at least a two to three months and should be actively participating in proper eating regimes, exercise and dietary programs. You should also be in good overall health, able to undergo general anesthesia and recover well from surgery.
Ideal candidates:
A body lift surgery should be performed when the patient is as close to their desired weight as possible and has maintained a stable weight for at least six months.
The procedure is carried out in a hospital environment and will require a minimum two-night stay. The body lift surgery takes about four to seven hours to complete, depending on complexity and the total number of different procedures. Either an IV sedation or general anesthesia will be used.
A lower body lift is focused on buttocks, hips, and thighs. It begins with your surgeon creating a circular incision above the buttocks and outer thighs. Then the surgeon will suture this area and begin performing a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). After that a horizontal incision is made along the pubic line area, followed by removal of fatty tissue and liposuction for fine contouring. The surgeon will then tighten the muscles in this area after the excess skin is detached. The remaining skin is then repositioned and sutured at the pubic line area.
The procedure for an upper body lift is similar, except that the incision is made on the bra-line.
A body lift is a major surgical procedure and will require a significant amount of time to ensure a full recovery, especially if a total body lift was performed. Each individual will recover at different speeds, but the average recovery time frame for this procedure is four to six weeks.
You may endure some pain and discomfort following your surgery. This can be mitigated with intravenous medication at the start and over time by moving to oral medication. Drainage tubes that were inserted during the procedure will be removed by a surgeon when the drainage fluid coming out is low. You will be given a full list of follow-up recovery instructions. Post-op recovery can last from six to eight weeks, and full recovery with final results showing will occur around six months after the surgery.
The results from having a body lift should last for quite some time, but by maintaining a healthy diet and doing routine exercises the results will even improve over time.
Body lift surgery is a highly customized procedure, so its cost will vary based on each patient’s unique circumstances and preferences. The most important factors that can impact the price of the body lift surgery are the type of body lift procedure(s), the amount of fatty tissue that has to be removed, surgeon’s qualifications, geographical location, the type of anesthesia and sedation used, diagnostic procedures and post-operative medications.
